In The Time Monster, the Doctor says he grew up in a house on a mountainside and talks about a hermit who lived under a tree behind the house and inspired the Doctor when he was depressed. In " Hell Bent" the Doctor recalled his origins as a high-born Gallifreyan. The First Doctor's childhood on Gallifrey has been little described in the series. The Doctor's memories were subsequently erased, prior to the childhood she remembers only snippets remain, masked as the story of the Irish Garda Brendan. ![]() Tecteun and the child were inducted into a clandestine organisation called the Division, the details of which were redacted from the Matrix. The Master reveals that the Doctor is the "timeless child". Tecteun then adopted the child and studied her, successfully grafting her regeneration capacity into the Shobogans, transforming them into Time Lords they chose to limit a Time Lord's regenerations to twelve. In this episode, The Master reveals to the Thirteenth Doctor that a female space explorer named Tecteun found a "timeless child" who had the power to regenerate. The episode " The Timeless Children" gives an alternative origin for The Doctor and the Time Lords. The promise itself is revealed in " The Day of the Doctor": "Never cruel nor cowardly. ![]() In " The Name of the Doctor", the Eleventh Doctor tells companion Clara Oswald that the name "Doctor" is essentially a promise he made. Spin-off media offer the explanation that the Doctor's true name is unpronounceable by humans. In later episodes of the revived programme, specifically under showrunner Steven Moffat, the story arcs surrounding events in the Doctor's future implied serious consequences in the event of the Doctor's true name being spoken, with the nature of these finally revealed in " The Time of the Doctor". Human companions accompany the Doctor through their adventures who serve as audience surrogate characters to ask questions which allow the Doctor to provide relevant exposition.
